BROWNS SUMMIT, N.C. – Davidson head golf coach Tim Straub has captured the Carolinas PGA Section Johnny Palmer Trophy, which is awarded annually to the player who post the lowest nine-round stroke average in the Carolinas PGA Major Tournaments, as announced Thursday.
Tim Straub, PGA, Head Men's Golf Coach – Davidson College
Tim Straub clinched the Johnny Palmer Trophy with a 70.55 scoring average in the four CPGA major championships during the 2013 season. Straub had strong performances in the Carolinas, North Carolina, and South Carolina Opens plus the CPGA Professional Championship recording Top-20 finishes in each event. His top performance during the season was at the 89th Carolinas Open Presented by BB&T played at Bryan Park Golf Course in Greensboro, N.C., where he finished T-4. His lowest round of the year was also at the Carolinas Open where he carded a 67 in the opening round.
Now in his 14th season at the helm, Straub led Davidson to a second-place finish in the 2013 Southern Conference Championship, the school's best showing in 40 years.
Under the 2003 Conference Coach of the Year's guidance, senior Richard Fountain captured the 2011 SoCon Individual Title, while advancing to a pair of NCAA Tournaments.
Davidson, which finished the fall with a pair of Top-5 finishes, will enjoy a four-month break from tournament action before opening its spring slate at the Mobile Bay Intercollegiate Feb. 17-18 in Mobile, Ala.
About The Johnny Palmer Trophy
The Johnny Palmer trophy is the award given to the player with the lowest nine-round stroke average in the four Carolinas PGA major tournaments. Johnny Palmer was a North Carolina-born golf legend who played successfully on the PGA Tour and received his nickname "Old Stone" from Sam Snead. The trophy was added to the Special Awards and Honors repertoire in 2007 and has come to symbolize the very things for which Palmer stood: a competitive spirit, a stoic and deliberate approach to the game, and quality play.
