Wildcat Men Fifth at SoCon Cross Country Championship

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Sal del Giudice led the Davidson men to a fifth-place finish at the 2013 Southern Conference Cross Country Championships, hosted by Samford at Veteran's Park Saturday morning.
Del Giudice finished one place shy of earning a spot on the All-Southern Conference team, completing the 8K course in 25 minutes, 41.39 seconds. He was joined in the Top 25 by teammates Whitner Chase in 19th (24:43.01) and Daniel Samet in 24th (25:54.82). Rounding out the top-five scoring group for the Wildcats, which totaled 124 points, was Ryan Phillips (30th, 26:12.71) and Grayam Sailor-Tynes (36th, 26:33.70).
UNCG's Paul Chelimo held the lead from start to finish, winning his third consecutive individual title, blazing the course with a time of 24:19.72. Chelimo's teammate Paul Katam (24:34.52) took second place for the second consecutive season, while Elon's Luis Vargas finished in third with a time of 25:01.56. Furman's Tripp Hurt came in fourth with a time of 25:01.56 and Chattanooga's Lucas Cotter rounded out the top five, posting a time of 25:04.72.
Furman was crowned the men's team champion with 48 points. The Paladins placed five runners in the Top 20 to capture the title. Appalachian State was second with 63 points, Chattanooga took third with 73 points and UNCG was fourth with 74 points.
It was Davidson's final appearance in the event, as the Wildcats will compete in the Atlantic 10 next season.
The 'Cats will next compete in the NCAA Southeast Region Championships in Charlottesville, Va. on Friday, Nov. 15.
