DAVIDSON, N.C. – Davidson junior Garrett Diehl was named the Pioneer Football League Co-Special Teams Player of the Week and was one of nine players named as an FCS National Kickoff Returner of the Week by the College Football Performance Awards, the organizations announced Sunday.
Diehl (Warrenton, Va.) returned a kickoff 92 yards for a touchdown in Saturday's loss at Stetson and finished with three returns for 120 yards. It was the first touchdown return of Diehl's career, and the first by a Davidson player since 2008 when Justin Williams did so against San Diego.
Diehl shared the PFL's weekly award with Butler's Jon Treloar, who connected on nine PATs and a field goal in Butler's 72-10 PFL victory against Valparaiso, Saturday. His 12-point effort broke a Butler record that stood for 39 years and was the best by a kicker in PFL play since the conference opener in Week 3.
The PFL honor is Diehl's first, and the first received by a Davidson player this season.
Additionally, Diehl earned national recognition from the CFPA along with eight other returners who returned kicks for scores. Recipients are selected exclusively based upon objective scientific rankings of the extent to which individual players increase the overall effectiveness of their teams.
Diehl received a CFPA honorable mention following Davidson's game at Morehead State Sept. 28 after he set career highs with seven kickoff returns for 175 yards (25-yard average), with a then-career long of 37.
The Wildcats are off this weekend, but will conclude the season Saturday, Nov. 23, in Richardson Stadium against Campbell.
