DAVIDSON, N.C. – A trip to Boston, tilts with Big 12 and ACC opponents and a re-match with Ohio State in front of the home crowd are among some of the highlights of the 2013-14 Davidson wrestling schedule as announced by head coach Bob Patnesky on Friday.
"This is a very balanced schedule that will challenge our team both mentally and physically," said Patnesky. "It will test us to the greatest degree in preparing us for the NCAA Championships."
The Wildcats open the season with a 1 p.m. dual meet at Belmont Abbey in nearby Belmont, Nov. 3. Davidson defeated the Crusaders 34-7 last season, with both Anthony Elias and Kevin Birmingham earning wins by fall.
Davidson will return to the Wolfpack Open, hosted by N.C. State in Raleigh, N.C., for the fourth consecutive season, Nov. 17. Scott Patrick was the team leader in last season's event, taking fifth overall at 184 pounds and going 6-1 on the day.
November 24 marks the Wildcats' return to Belk Arena where they will welcome Ohio State in a re-match from last season. The Wildcats and the Buckeyes will be joined by George Mason and Anderson in a 1 p.m. meet. Despite a 40-3 loss to No. 5 OSU last season, Davidson welcomed a record 1,107 fans to the Thursday night match and will look to repeat the feat this season. The 'Cats downed Anderson 39-12 in South Carolina last season, and have not faced George Mason since the 2011-12 season.
The 'Cats hit the road once again for their lone contest in the month of December, trekking to Boston on the seventh for a tri-meet with Boston University and Sacred Heart at 10 a.m. Davidson squared off with SHU in Fairfield, Conn., last season and came away with a 42-9 victory. They last made the trip to Bay State in January of 2011, again defeating the Pioneers 26-15 and falling to BU 36-10.
In kicking off the new year, the 'Cats will head to Ada, Ohio for a Wednesday evening match up with Ohio Northern at 7 p.m., Jan. 8. Davidson has faced the Polar Bears just twice before, barely falling to them by a score of 20-18 last season. From there, Davidson heads to Pennsylvania for the Univ. of Pittsburgh Duals where they will join the Panthers and seven other teams at Fitzgerald Field House on Sunday, Jan. 12. The 'Cats exact match ups are still to be announced, though they faced No. 15 Pittsburgh (L, 39-6) and Lock Haven (L, 31-6) at the event last season.
Soon after retuning home, the Wildcats open the 2014 SoCon slate by hosting in-state foe Gardner-Webb at Belk Arena Wednesday, Jan. 13. Davidson fell to the Runnin' Bulldogs, 29-6, despite getting wins from Philip Elias and Carson Stack. The 'Cats continue on with the conference schedule for their next three matches, traveling to VMI Friday, Jan. 24, at 7 p.m. before returning to Belk Arena to host SoCon foe The Citadel and out of conference opponent Franklin & Marshall Sunday, Jan. 26, at 1 p.m. Soon after, Davidson heads to Buies Creek, N.C., to square off with the Camels of Campbell University Saturday, Feb. 1, in a 5 p.m. dual.
Friday, Feb. 7, the Wildcats will travel to Coach Patnesky's alma mater, West Virginia Univ., to square off with the Mountaineers at 7 p.m. It will mark the first time in program history the two teams have met.
SoCon action will continue from then on, as Davidson hosts defending champion Chattanooga on Sunday, Feb. 9, in one final home match of the season at 1 p.m. Elias scored a major decision vs. the Mocs last season, though the 'Cats fell 37-7 in the end. Davidson then travels to Boone, N.C., to close out the regular season with a pair of matches at Appalachian State. They will face the host Mountaineers Sunday, Feb. 16, at 2 p.m. before returning a week later to finish out the regular season with a tilt vs. Southern Illinois Univ. – Edwardsville on Feb. 23 at 3 p.m. The Wildcats ended a 22-match SoCon losing streak with a 25-24 victory over the Cougars in 2013, with Birmingham and Nathaniel Powers earning crucial decisions.
Davidson will return to Buies Creek for the 2014 Southern Conference Championships, scheduled to be held Saturday, March 8, at Campbell University. Those who qualify will move on to the NCAA National Championships in Oklahoma City, Okla., starting Thursday, March 20. Last season, Anthony Elias wrestled his way from the seventh seed at the SoCon meet to become the champion of the 133-pound weight class. He took an overtime loss to Matt Bystol of Columbia at the event after falling to No. 9 Levi Wolfensperger of Northern Iowa in the first round. Elias was Davidson's first NCAA Wrestling Championships participant since 2010.
