CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. – Davidson senior linebacker Patrick Moynahan posted the best single-game tackling performance so far this season in the NCAA Division I Football Championship Subdivision on Saturday, and thus was named the Pioneer Football League Defensive Player of the Week, the conference announced Sunday.
Moynahan made 22 stops (five solo) to double his previous career high and set a new Davidson record. Only Boston College linebacker Nick Clancy has made more stops in a Division I football game this season, as he totaled 24 tackles against Northwestern on Sept. 15. Moynahan now leads the PFL with 13.3 tackles per game.
Two of the Sandwich, Mass. native's tackles in the 34-21 loss at Marist were for loss, and one of which was a sack. He also broke up one pass.
Moynahan broke the school record of 20 tackles held by Peter Bakke and Alex Arinsmier. Bakke accomplished the feat, including 14 solo stops, against Butler on Oct. 27, 2007, and Arinsmier first set the standard against Dayton on Oct. 2, 2004, including six solo stops. Davidson's records for the category date back to 1997.
The PFL record is 26 tackles, accomplished by San Diego's Andy Guzenski vs. Dayton on Nov. 2, 2002.
Moynahan was an All-PFL Honorable Mention player last season and was named to Phil Steele's Preseason All-Pioneer Football League second team prior to the season.
Davidson returns home to Richardson Stadium for their final non-conference game of the season Saturday at 6 p.m. against Presbyterian.
