DAVIDSON, N.C. - The Davidson wrestling team has added five freshmen for the 2012-13 season, head coach Bob Patnesky announced Wednesday.
The talented class, in which four of five were high school state tournament qualifiers, includes a local product, Patrick Devlin (Mooresville, N.C./Lake Norman) and a class valedictorian, Nathaniel Powers (Mill Hall, Pa./Central Mountain H.S.). Scott Cunningham (Virginia Beach, Va./Cape Henry Collegiate) was a Virginia Independent Schools Athletic Association state champion, while Carson Stack (Haddonfield, N.J./Haddonfield Memorial) was a state semifinalist and Alexander Renzi (Potomac, Md./St. Andrew's Episcopal) was a Maryland Prep state quarterfinalist.
“We're moving in the right direction with these newcomers combined with our returning guys,” said Patensky. “The biggest thing that is happening with our team is that they are gelling as one. Whether they are a freshman or a senior, it doesn't matter. They are all trying to help each other and get to the same point.”
Davidson returns 12 letterwinners and eight starters from last year's squad.
“As a program we're starting to get some depth,” said Patensky. “Our biggest problem was numbers, which has made it difficult for us in dual meets. We're in the process of fixing that and we'll have at least 18 guys on our team this year. Hopefully we can grow that number over 20 in the next year or two.“
