DAVIDSON, N.C. — The Second Annual Andrew Lovedale 5K, presented by Carolinas HealthCare System and held on September 1 on the Davidson College cross country trail, drew nearly 300 participants and raised more than $15,000 to benefit Access to Success programs in Benin City, Nigeria.
Over 230 people participated in Access to Success' (A2S) 5K race while additional supporters from across the country signed on as honorary runners. Seventeen-year-old James Gregory won the men's race in 19:02, followed immediately by seventeen-year-old Stephan Snyder (19:03) and fourteen-year-old Chance Brown (19.30). Fifteen-year-old Malia Ellington won the women's race with a time of 21.04, followed by nineteen-year-old Grace Watt (22.34) and nineteen-year-old Stephanie Schauder (22.34).
A2S President Andrew Lovedale was on hand for this year's festivities. He shared the foundation's mission with the participants, offered the opening prayer and fired the starting gun for both the men's and women's starts. Afterwards, Lovedale posed for pictures with winners and helped Davidson College President Carol Quillen and Athletic Director Jim Murphy hand out awards.
"The Davidson and Charlotte communities have continually shown our cause tremendous support, helping A2S to grow and reach more kids in Nigeria,” Lovedale said. “I am thankful to everyone who made our 5K a huge success and excited about the projects these funds will benefit. Thank you for trusting A2S to be an extension of your good works to God's children in need.”
This year's race included an after-party at the Brickhouse Tavern, where participants were treated to a free drink poured by celebrity bartenders NBA standout Stephen Curry and Davidson basketball coaches Bob McKillop and Jim Fox. Proceeds from a special brunch and raffle benefitted A2S.
Founded in 2010 by Lovedale, a former men's basketball player at Davidson College, A2S uses athletic, academic and spiritual programs to benefit underprivileged children in his hometown of Benin City, Nigeria. Proceeds from the annual 5K race help A2S achieve its strategic goals, which include running an ongoing after-school program at The Logos Academy and an annual basketball camp, as well as building a library and computer center and starting a feeding program at the sponsored school.
