DAVIDSON, N.C. - Wayne Miller and Andy Carter have joined the Davidson baseball program as assistant coaches, head coach Dick Cooke announced Tuesday.
Miller most recently served as an assistant coach at Emory & Henry College. Carter, a 2005 Davidson graduate and former player in the New York Yankees' organization, will serve as a volunteer assistant for the Wildcats after most recently serving as the head coach of the North Mecklenburg H.S. varsity squad.
“We're excited to have Wayne and Andy join our staff,” said Cooke. “Wayne brings with him the background of being a highly successful player at Samford while also being a very accomplished student there, and he has quickly made a mark for himself in the coaching ranks. Andy had an outstanding career at Davidson and was a great competitor on the mound for us. He can speak to the experience of having been a successful student-athlete at Davidson while also having played professional baseball for an affiliated organization. They will provide great energy and enthusiasm.”
In one season at Emory & Henry, Miller guided four all-conference players and one first-team all-region selection. The team tied its mark for best overall record and reached the Old Dominion Athletic Conference tournament for the first time in 15 years as a No. 3 seed.
In the summer of 2011, Miller served as an assistant coach for the Alexandria Aces in the Cal Ripken Collegiate Summer League, working with collegiate players at all levels. He has also coached summer baseball camps for the past five years and served as an assistant baseball coach in 2011 at his high school alma mater, Bearden H.S., in his native Knoxville, Tenn.
A 2010 cum laude graduate of Samford University with a degree in International Relations, Miller was a four-year starter at second base and centerfield and posted a .328 career batting average. He was selected to the All-Southern Conference second team and ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District team as a senior and was a four-year academic all-conference honoree. In 2009, Miller received the SoCon's Coleman-Lew Leadership Award.
“I am extremely grateful and excited to be back in the Southern Conference and to be a part of such a highly-esteemed academic institution here at Davidson,” said Miller. “Coach Cooke has built a nationally respected program and I look forward to working with him as well as the other new guys on our staff. We expect big things from our guys this year.”
Miller is also highly involved in community service. He has been a part of child mentorship programs, worked with homeless outreach organizations during the holidays and had worked with inner city youth.
Carter was a 35th round selection of the New York Yankees after graduating from Davidson in 2005 with a degree in history, and was a member of the 2005 Gulf Coast League Champion GCL Yankees team. In 2006, he pitched for the Washington Wildthings (Frontier League) and Gary Southshore Railcats (Northern League), and in 2007 he played for the Anderson Joes (South Coast League). He later worked for both the Yankees and Baltimore Orioles in baseball operations, working on advance scouting reports, minor league video input, and other special projects.
"I'd like to thank Coach Cooke for the opportunity to begin my collegiate coaching career at Davidson, a place for which I have developed an extreme fondness since first stepping foot on campus 12 years ago,” said Carter. “My experiences as a student-athlete at Davidson and in professional baseball are some of my greatest memories and I look forward to building new ones with the team as we strive for great success in the classroom and on the baseball field. It's great to be back."
As head coach, Carter ran all aspects of the North Mecklenburg H.S. baseball program for the 2011-12 academic year, revitalizing the program and guiding the conference player of the year. The year prior, he served as an assistant director of marketing and promotions in athletics at Davidson. From 2005 to 2011, Carter served as a pitching instructor for The Fungo Baseball School in nearby Cornelius, and served as a pitching coach for several of The Fungo's travel teams.
Carter, a native of Williamsville, N.Y. was twice named the Wildcats' most valuable pitcher during his career, and still ranks second at Davidson in career strikeouts (258) and innings pitched (322.1). As a senior, he led the 'Cats to their first winning season in 13 years.
