COLUMBUS, Ohio – Despite Andrew DiLallo's (Wellington, Fla.) second career strike, the Davidson men's soccer team fell to Wright State, 3-1, on day one of the Wolstein Classic, Friday at Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium.
The setback drops the Wildcats to 0-1-1 on the young campaign, while the Raiders move to 1-2-0.
DiLallo's 14th minute header came off a Jake Keator (Jacksonville, Fla.) corner that gave Davidson the early 1-0 advantage.
Along with his first assist of the season, Keator had some scoring opportunities of his own, putting a game-high three shots on frame.
“We got off to a really good start on a well-executed corner,” said Davidson head coach Matt Spear. “Unfortunately, we had a really poor stretch, where Wright State took advantage of their chances.”
Wright State wasted little time erasing the early deficit as the Raiders netted all three of their goals during a 7 minute and 50 second stretch midway through the opening period.
After setting up Brett Elder at the 16:09 mark to tie the score, 1-1, Derek Zuniga scored the eventual game-winner less than five minutes later.
Zuniga also provided an assist on Albert Nilsson's 24th minute goal.
“I'm surprised by those eight minutes, but very optimistic about the way we played the rest of the contest. I thought we did some good things, that we can definitely build on as we prepare for a very good Ohio State team on their home field,” Spear said.
Late in the first half, Alex Feliciano (Virginia Beach, Va.) just missed on a shot that was touched wide by Wright State keeper Jacob Bye, who finished with eight saves.
In the 86th minute, Davidson had another chance to make it a one-goal contest, but Bye turned away Chris Pettiglio's (Westford, Mass.) one-on-one left-footed attempt.
In addition to a 16-10 advantage in shots, the Wildcats held an 8-6 edge in corners.
Davidson will conclude its appearance in the Wolstein Classic with a 2:30 p.m. contest against the host Buckeyes Sunday afternoon.
