Davidson To Honor 20th Anniversary of Final Four Men's Soccer Team

Davidson, N.C. -- The Davidson Athletic Foundation will join Athletic Director Jim Murphy '78 and Head Men's Soccer Coach Matt Spear '93 to honor the 20th anniversary of the 1992 NCAA Final Four team on Friday and Saturday, October 5-6. A series of events have been scheduled to coincide with Davidson's Homecoming Weekend to honor the team's accomplishments.
In 1992 the Wildcats recorded a program-best 17 wins and captured the hearts of the Davidson campus and community en route to a NCAA Division I Final Four appearance. Davidson advanced on penalty kicks through the the first and second rounds of the tournament with wins over UNCC and Coastal Carolina. The 'Cats qualified for the semifinals with a 1-0 overtime victory against North Carlina State and went on to host the Final Four. Head Coach Charlie Slagle was honored as Division I Coach of the Year, the only coach in any sport at Davidson to received the prestigious award.
A Friday evening meet and greet with current players will take place after practice. On Saturday, a team dinner is scheduled for the players, families and friends. Following the dinner, the team, along with Coach Slagle, will be honored with commemorative rings during a half-time program of the Davidson vs. Georgia Southern game on Saturday, October 6 at 7:00 p.m. in Alumni Stadium.
