DAVIDSON, N.C. – Recent graduate Erin Keitel (Carlsbad, Calif.) and rising senior Abigail Doelger (West Hartford, Conn.) of the Davidson women's lacrosse team were honored by the Intercollegiate Women's Lacrosse Coaches Association (IWLCA) as they were two of 173 student-athletes from 56 different institutions to earn a spot on the 2012 Academic Honor Roll.
“It's exciting to see Erin and Abigail recognized for the hard work and dedication they put into their academics and athletics,” said head coach Kim Wayne. “Both of them are extremely deserving of this honor and I couldn't be more proud of them.”
The duo becomes the third and fourth Wildcats to earn a nod on the IWLCA Honor Roll, joining Haley Cook and Michele Pav who were named to the academic team in 2010.
Both players excelled on the field and in the classroom. Keitel graduated this past May from Davidson with a degree in anthropology (chemistry) and carried a 3.47 GPA during her four years. She was an All-National Lacrosse Conference Academic Team member earlier this year.
On the field, Keitel was one of the Wildcats' main offensive weapons. She closed out her senior campaign with 22 goals, a career-best 13 assists (third-most on team) and 35 points. It was the second year in a row she reached the 20-goal mark and finished with 61 total for her career to go with 27 assists and 88 points. In addition, Keitel tallied personal bests of 17 groundballs, 13 draw controls and six caused turnovers in 2012. She started 46 of 55 games played during her career.
Doelger returns as one of the 'Cats' top defensive players. A year ago, Doelger, who started all 18 games, was second on the team with a career-best 32 groundballs and topped the team with 20 caused turnovers, also a personal-best.
In the classroom, she has carried a 3.49 GPA while majoring in biology. For the second year in a row, Doelger was named to the NLC All-Academic Team.
All student-athletes were nominated by their schools and had achieved at least junior status academically. Leading the way was IWLCA Scholar-Athlete of the Year Melanie Baskind from Harvard University. Among the 171 student-athletes were 27 who were members of teams that advanced to this year's NCAA tournament, including two from national champion Northwestern and two from national runner-up Syracuse.
