Big South Receives Automatic NCAA Tournament Bid For Women's Lax

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — The Davidson women's lacrosse team has a chance to make their first appearance in the NCAA Tournament as the Big South Conference has received automatic qualification to the NCAA Women's Lacrosse Championship as part of a postseason bracket expansion approved by the NCAA Executive Committee today.
Davidson, which was recently in the National Lacrosse Conference and received a associate member invite, joins this Big South this spring. The Big South is now one of 13 conferences that will have an automatic bid in women's lacrosse as the championship field increases from 16 to 26 teams.
The Big South will play its inaugural women's lacrosse season in 2013 with seven other squads joining Davidson -- Campbell, Coastal Carolina, High Point, Liberty, Longwood, Presbyterian College and Winthrop. Of those eight, Campbell, Coastal Carolina and Winthrop will debut their respective programs this spring. The first Big South Women's Lacrosse Championship will be a four-team format and will be take place over the weekend of April 26-28 at the No. 1 seed.
The Wildcats are coming off an 8-10 campaign in 2012. They finished 4-3 and reached the semifinals of the tournament in their final season in the NLC. The 'Cats bring back 19 letterwinners, including nine starters as head coach Kim Wayne enters her fourth season. Leading the way is Ann Fucigna, who set the single-season record for goals (51) and points (74) a year ago. She also added 23 assists, setting a personal-best this year and tying for third-most in a Wildcat single-season.
