DAVIDSON, N.C. — Coming off a school-record 100-reception season a year ago, Lanny Funsten added to his preseason honors by earning a spot on the College Sporting News FCS Preseason All-America Third team announced today.
The senior was also named to the 2012 College Football Performance Awards Watch List along with teammate Toms Bernhards-Callahan, who was on the Punter Returner watch list.
Funsten, who hauled in 1,107 yards last year to lead the PFL, was also named to the third-team Preseason All-America by The Sports Network and earned second-team honors from BeyondSportsCollegeNetwork.com. The Wildcats' tops receiver caught eight touchdown passes and ranked seventh in the PFL in all-purpose yards in 2011. Following the season, Funsten was named first-team All-America by BeyondSportsCollegeNetwork.com and second-team All-Pioneer Football League by the conference's coaches.
Bernhards-Callahan, a All-PFL honorable mention a season ago, averaged 11.6 yards a punt return and 19.6 yards a kick return. The junior's 94-yard punt return for a touchdown against Marist equaled the school record, set by George Hannen against Wofford in 1969. The return was the first punt return for a touchdown for Davidson since Ryan Hutto returned one 36 yards against Georgetown in 2000.
The Wildcats return 12 starters and 43 lettermen from last year's squad that went 4-7 overall and 2-6 in the PFL. The 2012 season begins in Richardson Stadium against Georgetown, Sept. 1.
