NEW ORLEANS, La. – The Davidson men's track and field team ranked among the best in the nation academically, as it was recognized as one of 85 teams to earn U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association All-Academic honors for the 2012 season, it was announced Thursday.
The Wildcats, who have been guided by head coach Gary Andrew for the past 26 seasons, have earned the distinction following each season in which records are available since 2003. Davidson posted a team grade point average of 3.25 to earn the distinction. A team cumulative team GPA of 3.00 or better is required for the honor.
Stanford reported a cumulative team GPA of 3.49 through the spring 2012 semester to lead all men's Division I programs. Duke at 3.46 and Tulsa and Chattanooga at 3.45 followed.
The Big East and Ivy League tied as the conference leaders with seven teams each earning All-Academic honors. The ACC followed with six.
The men's track & field team at the University of Florida was named as Scholar Team of the Year in Division I for 2012. The squad earned the distinction as a result of being the highest-placing team with at least a 3.00-cumulative GPA at the most recent NCAA indoor and outdoor championships.
One other Southern Conference member, Wofford, joined Davidson and Chattanooga on the list. The Wildcats placed fifth at both the indoor and outdoor SoCon Championship meets in 2012
