DAVIDSON, N.C. — The Davidson Wildcat women's soccer team will play host to 10 teams, including ACC-foe Clemson, to go along with their normal 11-game Southern Conference schedule as announced by head coach Greg Ashton with the release of the 2012 schedule.
The Wildcats, coming off a 9-9-2 season a year ago with the return of 23 letterwinners and nine starters, open the 2012 season with four of their first seven games coming at home, including an exhibition against Gardner-Webb, Aug. 13. A year ago, the 'Cats sported a 6-5-2 home record and pushed their school-record home unbeaten streak to 13 games in the first two games of the 2011 campaign. Over the last seven years, Davidson has gone 42-16-9 at the friendly confines of Alumni Stadium.
Davidson will also host Liberty (Aug. 17) and Tennessee Tech (Aug. 26) during the month of August to start the season. It will be the program's first matchup against Tennessee Tech, while it is a perfect 5-0 against the Flames, having last played them in 1993.
After a pair of road games on the North Carolina Coast side of the state against East Carolina (Aug. 31) and UNC Wilmington (Sept. 2), the Wildcats return home for contests against Clemson and North Florida, Sept. 7-9. ECU is coming off an 11-8-1 season in 2011, while UNCW and Davidson have played each other six times in the last seven years with the Seahawks owning a 4-2 record in that stretch.
The Wildcats will be hunting for their first win against the Clemson Tigers in the all-time series (0-6). The two teams have not played each other since 1999. The contest against North Florida will be the first for both squads.
The next two contests, Sept. 13 and 16, will see Davidson finish out its non-conference slate of games by returning to the road to take on cross-county rival Charlotte and William & Mary. The 'Cats are hunting for their fourth win in the all-time series against the rival 49ers after tying them at home 1-1 last year. The Tribe are coming off a 17-3-2 season a year ago and have not faced the Wildcats since 1990.
Chattanooga and Samford visit Alumni Stadium to open up Davidson's SoCon schedule, Sept. 21 and 23. Samford is the reigning regular-season and tournament champion after a perfect 9-0-2 run through the league. The Bulldogs went 14-6-2 overall. The 'Cats have owned the Mocs, rattling off a 16-1-1 all-time record against them, including last year's 2-1 overtime victory.
Davidson will visit five of its next six SoCon opponents on the road, starting with a trip to Western Carolina and then to Appalachian State the weekend of Sept. 28-30. The Wildcats then travel to The Citadel to open October, before coming home to face College of Charleston, Oct. 7. CofC tied UNCG with a 7-3-1 record in league play. Davidson has split its last six games against the Cougars.
The Wildcats final five games have them traveling to UNCG and Elon, Oct. 12-14, then back home for two games against Wofford (Oct. 19) and Furman (Oct. 21), before finishing out the regular season at Georgia Southern, Oct. 24. Davidson will seek to avenge a 2-1 home defeat to the Paladins in the quarterfinals of the SoCon Tournament last year. The 'Cats currently have a nine-game unbeaten streak against the Wofford Terriers and are carrying a five-game streak against the Eagles. They also are 8-1 vs. the Phoenix in the last nine games.
The SoCon Tournament, an eight-team format with the four higher seeds hosting the first round, begins Oct. 28. The semifinals and championship game will be hosted by Samford in Birmingham, Ala., Nov. 2 and 4. Since 1994, the first year the Wildcats were members of the SoCon, they have gone 16-13 in the conference tournament and taken home the championship title four times — 1994, '95, '96 and 2009.
