DAVIDSON, N.C. — The Davidson women's lacrosse team has picked its captains for the 2012-2013 season as seniors Jessica Melby (Pittsburg, Pa.) and Abigail Doelger (West Hartford, Conn.) along with junior Paige Logan (Garden City, N.Y.) were tabbed the captains by the team as announced today by head coach Kim Wayne.
The trio are part of a defensive unit that returns everyone on the backline next year. They are three of 19 letterwinners in all who return from this past season's 8-10 squad, which reached the semifinals of the National Lacrosse Conference Tournament for the third straight season.
Logan made the transition from the offensive side her freshman year to the defense after the Wildcats graduated four defenders after the 2011 campaign. She registered 22 groundballs, 16 draw controls and forced eight turnovers as a sophomore in 2012. The defender put up those defensive numbers after recording 22 groundballs, 21 draw controls and 15 caused turnovers as a freshman in 2011.
A NLC All-Academic Team member this year, Logan was one of six 'Cats to start all 18 games a year ago. She also showcased her offensive skills with five goals and three assists for eight points to push her career totals to 26 goals, nine assists and 35 points. For her efforts, Logan was honored with the 2012 team's Wildcat Award.
Doelger, a two-time NLC All-Academic Team member, had a breakout junior season in 2012. The rising senior started all 18 games on defense, joining Logan as one of just six to accomplish the feat. She tallied career bests in groundballs (32- second on team) and caused turnovers (20- tops on team), while matching her career-high in draw controls with eight.
The Wildcats' starting goalie the last two years, Melby returns to finish out her career between the pipes. The last two seasons has seen the rising senior start all 36 games for Davidson. She was an NLC All-Second Team pick this past season after stopping a career-high 153 shots and sporting a 12.39 goals against average. Melby ranked second in the NLC in saves and was third overall in goals against average.
Melby added 18 groundballs and four caused turnovers to push her career totals to 48 and 11, respectively. An NLC All-Tournament Team member in 2011, Melby stopped a career-high 17 shots in a 15-10 win at home vs. UC Davis, Mar. 1. She registered seven games with 10 or more saves.
Davidson brings back nine of its regular starters, including Melby, Logan and Doelger, for the 2013 campaign. Next year will also mark a move from the NLC to the newly formed women's lacrosse Big South Conference. The Wildcats, who joined the NLC in 2010 after playing independent for four years when they left the American Lacrosse Conference after the 2005 season, will join Big South members Campbell, Coastal Carolina, High Point, Liberty, Presbyterian and Winthrop. Of those six, High Point, Liberty and Presbyterian competed in the NLC with the Wildcats. Campbell, Coastal Carolina and Winthrop will debut their respective women's lacrosse programs in 2013.
