DAVIDSON, N.C. — The Davidson women's lacrosse team got the experience of international play as they got the opportunity to travel across Europe to see the sites and play against international teams for 10 days.
Davidson teamed up with (AIST) American International Sports Teams, Inc., for its 10-day tour through Munich, Italy and Switzerland. The Wildcats played four games and have two practices/clinics, while also taking in all the sites during their stops.
Below is the Wildcats' final blog from their trip as they continued their tour through Europe, told by Erin Keitel, Emily Cooke and Rebecca Garman....
... "All in all, Italy was phenom-skis and an absolutely perfect way to finish up the Davidson Lax Eurotrip '12.
For the first full day of our Italian ventures, we traveled to Milan, A.K.A the fashion capital of the world. We finally got to exchange money (for the majority of the team, the first half of the trip was pretty stingy because of mysterious European banking holidays), and we proceeded to indulge in gelato, wine, pizza, and fresh European garb. We began our day in the Cathedral square, in which several bracelet vendors immediately asked for Liz (Edwards) and (Jessica) Melby's hand in marriage. Maybe something was lost in translation?
In the afternoon, we went on a group tour in the historic part of Milan. We had first-hand experience in the stereotype of European women not shaving their armpits, thanks to our Italian tour guide. We were not allowed to enter the Cathedral because of our “scandalous” attire, but the outside was beautifully decorated with thousands of handcrafted marble statues (see: we did pay attention in the tour).
We also explored the Galleria, the original shopping center of Milan. We got to spin around on a lucky Italian royal family crest in the mosaic-tiled floor, obviously bringing a lot of attention to ourselves as tourists.
The next day, we explored the towns of Lake Como and Bellagio. We took a beautiful boat tour of the lake, which is surrounded by marvelous Italian villas. The villas are the getaway spots for many Italian and international celebrities, such as George Clooney, and soon, the Davidson College Women's Lacrosse Team (alums: you're allowed to visit)!!! We made a pit stop in Bellagio, where we enjoyed a wine tasting and shopping. On the boat, we learned that head coach Kim (Wayne) is not a fan of bugs. When a spider was sighted, she jumped onto (Lindsay Cooper) Coop for cover, while Nikki (assistant coach Lieb) calmly swatted it into the water. We spent the rest of the afternoon shopping in Lake Como.
The time rolled around when we were to actually play lacrosse again. Our third day in Italy was spent again at Lake Como and then in the afternoon having a clinic with the Italian National Lacrosse Team. In the morning, half of the group further explored Lake Como, took a hike, chilled lakeside/poolside, while the other group had another wine tasting. The tasting was at 11 a.m., but as eloquently stated by Jenna Mugele, “It's 5 o'clock somewhere.” Which in fact it was in America. Not sure if 5 a.m. was what Jimmy Buffet was talking about, but hey, when in Italy!
We spent the afternoon with the Italian Lacrosse Team. It is their second year in existence, so we gave them some drills and lax tips. There are now two women's teams in Italy, so it's great seeing lacrosse in different parts of the world. After the clinic, we got to hang out with the girls.
We kept with tradition on our final day in Europe, emptying our wallets at the local markets around the beautiful Lake Lugano and also filled our stomachs with a tasty assortment of treats from the Coop. We were also delighted to discover that the Lions Club (an international organization) was distributing free risotto, and it is not like the Davidson Lax team to turn away anything even remotely edible. Much to our dismay, we had to say goodbye to the shimmering lake, but our afternoon and evening plans brought even more excitement. It is safe to say that we developed more than lacrosse skills in our game against Great Britain. We are returning to America with a great new assortment of “lax lingo” which we garnered from the “match”. From now on, our defense will be “repelling cutters” and our attack's shots will be “spot on”. After snapping our traditional international pic with our English friends we made our way to a local pizzeria where we had no problem annihilating some delicious pizza and a delectable desert. After a long hot day of lax, we all enjoyed the company of friends and a nice refreshing glass of water, and perhaps Kim's was the iciest of all.
Our trip to Europe was unforgettable and the memories will forever warm our hearts. We were so lucky to have been afforded this unique opportunity (and our luck seemed to have followed Dodie (Erin Doherty) throughout the trip, as this luck came in the form of bird feces from the sky…twice) On our way back to the states we cannot help but fondly remember our time in Europe and anxiously anticipate our lax domination come during the Fall and into the Spring of 2013!" ....
