DAVIDSON, N.C. - Davidson football coach Tripp Merritt announced today that 31 student-athletes, making up the class of 2016, have committed to play football for the Wildcats, beginning in the 2012 season. The Davidson football team will report to preseason camp, Aug. 8.
“We've turned over a lot of rocks to put this class together, and I think it's one of the best since I've been back at Davidson,” said Merritt, who begins his eighth season as the head coach of the Wildcats in 2012. “This class has size and speed and an array of combo players with versatility. Once again, North Carolina was particularly good to us as well as Georgia, especially the Atlanta area.”
The Wildcats continued to draw from around the country as 10 different states are represented in the class, including 12 players from North Carolina and South Carolina and six from Georgia. Sixteen players are on the offensive side of the ball, 11 play defense and four are listed as playing either offense or defense.
The Wildcats return 12 starters and 43 lettermen from last year's squad that went 4-7 overall and 2-6 in the Pioneer Football League. The 2012 campaign begins in Richardson Stadium against Georgetown, Sept. 1.
