DAVIDSON, N.C. – Following up her stout freshman all-conference first team campaign, sophomore Ann Fucigna (Darien, Conn.) was again named to the All-National Lacrosse Conference First Team as she led a group of four Wildcats who earned all-league honors as announced Saturday evening at the NLC banquet on the campus of Davidson College.
Though the first team had just Fucigna on it, the all-conference second team was well represented for Davidson. Jessica Melby (Pittsburgh, Pa.) was the top goalie, Diane Girling (Lynchburg, Va.) was one of three defenders and Erin Doherty (Cincinnati, Ohio) was one of three attackers on the team.
The Wildcats also put three players on the NLC All-Academic Team. Junior Abigail Doelger (West Hartford, Conn.) was named to the team for the second straight season, while Paige Logan (Garden City, N.Y.) and senior Erin Keitel (Carlsbad, Calif.) earned their first nods on the team. Doelger, who started all 18 games, was second on the team with a career-best 32 groundballs and topped the team with 20 caused turnovers, also a personal-best.
Moving from offense to defense this year in helping to replace four seniors on that side of the field, Logan tallied 22 groundballs, 16 draw controls and eight caused turnovers. She also chipped in five goals and three assists. Keitel teamed with Fucigna and Doherty on the offensive end to help Davidson average just over 12 goals a game. The senior tri-captain reached the 20-goal mark for the second year in a row with 22 on the season and assisted on a career-high 13 goals for personal-best tying 35 points. She registered a career-best 13 draw controls.
Fucigna was one of the best offensive forces again this year in the NLC and put her name in the Wildcat record books. A year after tying the single-season Wildcat record for goals (49), she broke it with a team-high 51 goals, getting four of them in the NLC semifinal game against High Point. In the quarterfinals vs. Longwood, Fucigna put her name atop the single-season points mark and finished the year with a school record 74. Both numbers ranked in the top-four of the league. She also had 23 assists, setting a personal-best this year and tying for third-most in a Wildcat single-season. The sophomore registered 15 multi-goal games, including hitting the five-goal mark three times. Fucigna nearly tied the single-game record for points when she recorded 10 points on five goals and a career-best five assists in a 21-15 win at home vs. Presbyterian, Mar. 24.
Doherty helped the Wildcats control the opening draw, gathering in a single-season record 69 draw controls in 18 games. She broke her school-record 50 set last year. The sophomore, who was tied for second in the league going into the tournament in draw controls, twice registering nine in a game. In addition, Doherty was one of the 'Cats' main offensive threats, scoring a career-high 29 goals and earning a new personal-best 43 points. She finished second on the team with 14 assists.
Melby and Girling helped anchor Davidson's defense. In her second year starting between the pipes, Melby stopped a career-best 153 shots and finished with a 12.39 goals against average. Seven times she picked up 10 or more saves, including a career-high 17 in a 15-10 win over UC Davis.
Just a freshman, Girling was outstanding on defense for the Wildcats. She closed the season with 19 caused turnovers and 36 groundballs, while following Doherty with 36 draw controls. Three times in a game she registered at least three groundballs and three caused turnovers.
Fucigna, Doherty, Keitel, Melby and Doelger were each named NLC Player of the Week at one time during season.
High Point, which went 7-0 in the league, took home three of the top player awards. Anna Wallingford was the NLC Goalie of the Year, while fellow teammates Christie Dougherty and Mackenzie Carroll were the Midfielder and Attacker of the Year.
Following the graduation of two-time Defender of the Year Lily Graham of Davidson, Jacksonville's Rachel Hannon won the honor this year, while the Dolphins' Holly Ventimiglia was the Newcomer of the Year. Rounding out the top awards was Laura Maness of Detroit who earned Coach of the Year after the Titans regrouped from a 1-7 start to enter the tournament 7-8 overall and 5-2 in league play.
Davidson's (8-10) season came to an end with a tough 13-11 semifinal defeat to High Point on Saturday, May 5. It was the third straight year the Wildcats reached the NLC semifinals.
