DAVIDSON, N.C. – Ann Fucigna tallied four goals and three assists to set the Davidson single-season points record and lead the Wildcats to a 19-9 victory over Longwood in the quarterfinals of the National Lacrosse Conference Tournament Friday afternoon at Richardson Stadium.
The fourth-seeded Wildcats (8-9) face top-seeded High Point Saturday at 11:30 a.m. in semifinal action at Richardson Stadium.
Fucigna passed Jen Crawford, who tallied 64 points in 2010. The sophomore needs three goals to break the single-season record in that category, which she tied last year with 49.
Jenna Mugele netted four goals, and Erin Doherty collected two goals and two assists. Emily Cooke registered two goals and an assist, while Emily Rademacher and Alanna Parker each scored two goals. Goalie Jessica Melby saved 10 of the 19 shots on goal.
Mary Barondess scored three goals to lead Longwood, and Lauren Prasnicki collected two goals and one assist. Mollie Zimmerman and Christian Acker combined for six saves with each goalie playing 30 minutes.
With the score tied 3-3, the Wildcats took control of the game with a 7-1 run over 7:49 in the first half. Lindsay Cooper and Mugele ignited the spurt with consecutive free-position goals, and Fucigna added an unassisted tally.
After Barondess scored for Longwood, Mugele scored two goals in a 4-0 Davidson run that made the margin 10-4. The 'Cats worked the offense and got a great look for Cooke, who scored with eight seconds left in the frame to make the lead 11-5 at halftime.
After a pair of Lancer tallies trimmed the margin to 12-7 early in the second half, Davidson scored six straight to open an 18-7 cushion. Parker netted two during that stretch, and Doherty capped it with a free-position tally with 6:03 left in the game.
Longwood caps its season by taking on Howard Saturday at 9 a.m. at Richardson Stadium.
