DAVIDSON, N.C. – After helping leading the Davidson women's lacrosse team to a 2-0 weekend, freshman Emily Cooke (Woodstock, Md.) was tabbed the National Lacrosse Conference Newcomer of the Week as announced today by the league.
Cooke becomes the third Wildcat to earn the Newcomer of the Week award, joining fellow classmates Emily Rademacher (Lynchburg, Va.) and Mary Leonard (Hendersonville, Tenn.). She is the seventh Wildcat overall to earn one of the NLC's three weekly awards.
The freshman attacker assisted Davidson to wins over Longwood and Liberty for the week by scoring four goals, assisting on three others and earning seven points. She pushed her season totals to 27 goals, second-most on the team, seven assists and 34 points, which is good for third-best.
Cooke opened the weekend against Longwood by picking up a goal and assist in an 18-14 win. The victory snapped Davidson's four-game skid in the all-time series against the Lancers as well as gave head coach Kim Wayne her first win against LU.
On Sunday in the 'Cats' home finale, Cooke helped bring Davidson back from an early 5-2 deficit by tying her season bests with three goals and two assists in an 18-11 triumph over Liberty. The freshman's goal at the 10:35 mark in the first half proved to be the game-winner, the first of her young career. The five points for the game matched her season-high.
Cooke has tallied eight multi-goal games this year, while starting 14 of the Wildcats' 15 games.
The Wildcats (7-8, 4-2 NLC), riding a three-game win streak, wrap up their regular season with a trip to High Point Saturday, April 28, at 6 p.m.
