DAVIDSON, N.C. – Freshman Mary Leonard capped off an outstanding week after helping lead Davidson to a pair of wins by garnering the National Lacrosse Conference's Newcomer of the Week award as announced by the league recently.
Leonard registered a pair of hat tricks in guiding the Wildcats to wins over Saint Francis (Pa.), 13-9, and Siena, 14-13, in games during the week of March 6-13. The freshman becomes the second Wildcat to win the NLC Newcomer of the Week award joining Emily Rademacher.
The midfielder started her week with three goals, a groundball and a draw control in pacing the Wildcat offense to a win over the Red Flash. Leonard sparked a 6-0 run in the first half by scoring the first two goals.
She then had a breakout game, making just her third career start, with a season-high four points on another three goals and a assist during Davidson's thrilling 14-13 last-second win. Her four points on the afternoon were a season-best.
Leonard was one of eight 'Cats to score in the victory vs. the Saints as her three goals in each game during the week tied a season-high. She was effective on her shots, putting six of her eight total shots between the pipes.
Davidson wraps up its six-game homestand with a 6 p.m. contest on Wednesday, March 14, against Lafayette.
