SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Davidson men's indoor track & field distance runner Demetrios Pagonis has been named the Southern Conference's Student-Athlete of the Week for the second time this season, the league office announced Thursday.
The junior from Westminister, Md., broke the Davidson indoor 3,000-meter record at the Kent Taylor Invitational hosted by the University of North Carolina on Saturday. Pagonis won the 3,000m by over 11 seconds in a time of 8:19.80 to best the previous standard of 8:20.39 set by Tom Divinnie in 2010.
Pagonis, a chemistry major, was the first 2011-12 recipient of the SoCon's weekly student-athlete honor on Sept. 7 during the cross country season. Two Wildcats, women's soccer's Stephanie Gerow (Oct. 13) and men's basketball's JP Kuhlman (Dec. 21), have also claimed the same award this academic year.
The Davidson men's track and field team will compete at the Fast Track Invitational hosted by Wake Forest over the weekend before heading to Birmingham for the 2012 Southern Conference Indoor Championship.
