DAVIDSON, N.C. — The Davidson women's lacrosse team starts its 2012 home slate of games on Saturday, Feb. 25, when the Wildcats play host to Navy at Richardson Stadium.
The Opening Draw Control
Davidson (0-1) starts a six-game homestand with its contest against Navy (3-1). The Wildcats will also host UC Davis, Vermont, St. Francis (Pa.), Siena and Lafayette during the stretch, with UC Davis and Sierna being the first meetings in program history.
The All-Time Series/Last Meeting
Both teams have faced each other four times since the first meeting in 2008. Navy holds a 3-1 advantage and is riding a three-game win streak.
Last year in Annapolis, Md., Navy had four players score multiple goals, led by Jasmine DePompeo's five, and the Mids sent Davidson to its first road loss of the 2011 season as they took a 15-5 decision.
Last Time Out...
... Davidson — American had three players record hat tricks on the day and Davidson was unable to recover from a 6-2 halftime deficit in falling 12-6 on the road in its season-opener.
The 'Cats had three players record a pair of goals. Freshman Emily Cooke netted her first two career collegiate goals. Returning leading scorer Ann Fucigna pushed her multi-goal streak to 11 straight with two goals and added an assist. Erin Keitel rounded out the trio of Wildcat scorers with two of her own scores.
Down 6-1, Cooke and Fucigna scored back-to-back goals to close the first half and open the new stanza to bring the Wildcats within three. American answered with a 6-0 run to made it 12-3 with 7:31 remaining and Davidson never was able to recover.
Goalie Jessica Melby, who had 14 saves in the game vs. the Eagles, was recently named the National Lacrosse Conference's Defender of the Week.
... Navy — Junior Kathy Young and sophomore Molly Hamilton scored four goals apiece as the Navy women's lacrosse team defeated Monmouth, 13-4, on Wednesday.
Hamilton scored three of her career-high four goals in the first half while Young tallied three of her four goals in the second half.
Hamilton and sophomore attack Aimee Gennaro scored the first two goals of the game, before Monmouth tallied its first strike. The Mids then took control of the game and closed the first half with six straight goals for a 7-1 halftime lead.
Senior goalie Elaina Ponchione earned her second win of the season by playing the first 49 minutes, making six saves and allowing four goals. Junior Michelle Verbeeck was flawless over the final 10 minutes, making three saves and allowing no goals.
