Pagonis Breaks Own 3000M Record; Men’s Track & Field Fourth at SoCon Indoor Championships

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Junior Demetrios Pagonis and senior Ryan Hopkins both surpassed the previous Davidson standard in the 3000-meter run to lead the Wildcat men on the first day of the Southern Conference Indoor Track and Field Championships Thursday at the Birmingham Crossplex.
Pagonis placed third in 8:16.27, while Hopkins trailed in fourth in 8:18.76. Both times surpassed Pagonis' record set 8:19.80 set earlier this month. Junior Vincent Weir was eighth in the same event in 8:30.42.
Davidson sits in fourth with 21 points.
Sophomore Stewart Dalton found a place on the podium as he nearly broke the Davidson long jump record of 21 feet, 11 ¾ inches (6.70m). He placed third with a personal-best leap of 21-11 (6.68m).
Sophomore Andrew Lantz, who won the 800-meter run race at last year's championship, won the preliminary race with a time of 1:54.22.
Davidson's distance medley relay team of freshmen Sal de Giudice and Wesley Laytham and sophomores Nate Faubion and Will Mitchell placed sixth in 10:22.05 to earn a place on Davidson's top-10 best list.
Sophomore Michael Lorentsen matched his personal best performance in the pole vault of 13-7.25 (4.15m) to place 12th.
Seniors Lee Dorsey and Taylor Martin led the Wildcats in the sprint event preliminaries, but neither qualified for the finals. Martin ran a personal best and Davidson top-10 time of 50.78 in the 400-meter dash. Dorsey cracked the 'Cats' top-10 performers list in the 60-meter dash (7.26) and 200-meter dash (23.35).
Appalachian State leads on both the men's and women's side. The Mountaineer men have 62.5 points.
Friday's events begin at 9:15 a.m. CT with the completion of the men's heptathlon.
