Golf Second After Two Rounds At Wexford Intercollegiate

HILTON HEAD ISLAND, S.C. – Led by sophomore Richard Fountain in third place individually, the Davidson men's golf team ranks second at 598 (+22), seven strokes off the lead, Monday at the Wexford Plantation Intercollegiate hosted by Francis Marion on the Wexford Plantation Course.
Cold and windy conditions resulted in high scores for all 17 teams competing on the 6,828-yard, par-72 layout course.
Fountain fired a three-over-par 75 in the first round in the morning, but rallied with a two-under-par 70 in the second round for a two-round score of 145 (+1). He sits two strokes off the lead with 18 holes remaining, as Damon Stephenson and Tyler Gruca, both from Georgia State, rank 1-2 on the leaderboard at 143 (-1) and 144 (E), respectively. Georgia State leads as a team with a score of 591 after 36 holes.
Sophomore Sam Echikson fired a pair of 75's for the Wildcats to finish the day in a five-way tie for 12th at 150, six-over-par, while junior John Skeadas trails at 151 (76+75) in a nine-way tie for 17th. Freshman Ralph Blasey is one stroke behind Skeadas at 152 (77+75) in a four-way tie for 26th.
The Wildcats hold a three-stroke lead over conference rival Furman (601) and a five-stroke lead over Louisville. Southern Conference schools Western Carolina (ninth, 618), Samford (10th, 619) and Elon (17th, 641) are also competing in the tournament.
The final round will begin Tuesday at 8:30 a.m. The tournament is the first of five for Davidson in the spring semester before the Southern Conference Championship.
