DAVIDSON, N.C. – Gardner-Webb earned three one-point decisions in the first four bouts and then claimed the remaining six for a 36-3 win over Davidson in Southern Conference wrestling action Thursday night in Belk Arena.
Freshman Anthony Elias earned the lone win for Davidson (3-13, 0-5 SoCon) with a 12-7 decision over Robert Golde at 133 pounds.
Gardner-Webb (6-11, 1-5 SoCon) got on the scoreboard first as Michael Slaughter earned a 2-1 decision over Matt Zarth at 125 pounds with the riding time point. There were no takedowns in the bout.
Elias evened the match at 3-3, but Alex Hamm (141 pounds) and Davante Andujar (149) both earned 5-4 decisions for the Runnin' Bulldogs. Andujar won on a take down in the waning seconds of the bout.
Alex Medved won by fall at 157 pounds and Justin Guthrie earned a major decision at 165 pounds to give Gardner-Webb a 19-3 advantage. G-W claimed the next two bouts by decision before Travis Porter scored a technical fall at 197 pounds. The Wildcats had to forfeit the heavyweight bout for the final margin.
Davidson will conclude the regular season Sunday at Appalachian State in a 3 p.m. match. The 'Cats will then compete in the SoCon Championship tournament March 3 in Chattanooga, Tenn.
Senior Tyler Mullen was honored prior to the match. The four-year starter at 165 pounds was the first recipient of Davidson's Ellington-Fagg Wrestling Scholarship.
