DAVIDSON, N.C. – The scoring duo of junior Alanna Parker (Spring Valley, Calif.) and sophomore Ann Fucigna (Darien, Conn.) were each named to the All-National Lacrosse Conference preseason team as selected by the NLC coaches recently.
Parker was part of the midfield unit, while Fucigna was on the front line at the attacker position. Both players were first-team all-league picks a season ago.
A captain this year, Parker has been a two-time All-NLC member. The junior midfielder followed up a stout freshman year with another strong sophomore campaign last year. She recorded 37 goals and 40 points, both second-best on the team. In her two-year career, Parker has already amassed 76 goals, 15 assists and 91 points, which is just nine away from reaching the program's top-5.
She opened the season scoring in 15 straight games to push her consecutive goal streak to 22 dating back to the end of her freshman year, before it was snapped vs. American in final regular season game.
Defensively Parker was just as strong, picking up 21 groundballs, forcing a career-high 11 turnovers and hauling in 47 draw controls. Her draw control total was fourth-best in the NLC, right behind teammate Erin Doherty.
Fucigna was one of the top freshman last year in the NLC, and finished the year on a torrid scoring pace. The first-year Wildcat led the team with 49 goals and 60 points. Fucigna's 49 goals tied the single-season record set by Jen Crawford, while her 60 points ranked third-most in a single-season.
After being held scoreless in back-to-back games Feb. 20 and 23, Fucigna was a scoring machine. She closed the season with 10 straight multi-goal games, including netting a season-best six goals in a 17-11 triumph at Presbyterian. The freshman also added a season and team season-high eight points in the win, assisting on two goals, and had 11 assists overall on the season, good for second-best on the squad.
Of her 49 goals, 47 of them came in the last 15 games for an average of 3.1 per game. Fucigna was also very successful in free-position attempts, going 16-for-22, a team-best.
Morgan Derner of Jacksonville was tabbed the preseason NLC Player of the Year after tallying 67 points, on 53 goals and 14 assists last season for the Dolphins.
Davidson, which returns eight starters and 16 letterwinners from last year's 6-12 squad, gears up for the start of its 2012 season on Feb. 18, when it heads to Washington, D.C., to take on American at 12 p.m.
