Men’s Cross Country Earns 14th Consecutive All-Academic Team Honor

NEW ORLEANS – The Davidson men's cross country team was designated as an USTFCCCA All-Academic Team for the 14th consecutive year, as announced Wednesday by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association.
With a team grade point average of 3.33, Davidson was one of 147 teams to earn the honor. To qualify as a USTFCCCA All-Academic Cross Country Team, the team must have had a cumulative team GPA of 3.00 or better and have started at least five runners at their respective NCAA regional championship.
The 147 institutions composing the group represent 30 different conferences. The Big East Conference had the most squads make the list with 11. The Big 12 followed with eight. Chattanooga reported the highest cumulative team GPA in the country through the fall 2011 semester at 3.81. Creighton followed at 3.72.
Senior Ryan Hopkins led the Wildcats to another successful season on the trails in 2011. Hopkins became the first Davidson runner to earn NCAA All-Region honors and set new 8K and 10K course records. As a team, the 'Cats finished second at the SoCon Championship meet and 14th in the NCAA Southeast Regional. Hopkins was named to the USTFCCCA Men's Cross Country All-Academic Team Friday.
Seven of the top ten finishing teams at the 2011 NCAA Cross Country Championships earned All-Academic status. Of the 31 teams that participated in the national meet, 20 of those earned All-Academic status.
The Badgers of the University of Wisconsin are the USTFCCCA NCAA Division I Men's Scholar Team of the Year for the 2011 cross country season. Wisconsin won its first NCAA Cross Country Championship title since 2005 this fall.
Scholar teams of the year are determined from among those who earned All-Academic status and placed highest as a team at the most recent NCAA Championships.
