GREENSBORO, N.C. — Davidson put three scorers in double figures, and kept its road and overall win streaks intact with a 58-49 victory at UNCG on Tuesday evening in Southern Conference women's basketball action at Fleming Gym.
Davidson (18-7, 14-2 SoCon) tied the school record with its 14th league win as it kept pace with first-place Appalachian State to set up a showdown of the top-two teams in the league standings on Saturday in Belk Arena at 2:30 p.m. It's the Wildcats Pink Zone game as well.
The Wildcats pushed their overall win streak to a season-high seven straight, while winning their fifth in a row on the road.
Sophia Aleksandravicius (Pound Ridge, N.Y.) paced the Wildcat attack with her 10th double-double on 14 points and 10 rebounds. Laura Murray (Harrisburg, Pa.) and Shneeka Center (Smithtown, N.Y.) each chipped in 10 points.
UNCG (3-22, 2-15 SoCon) put a pair in double figures, led by Breonna Patterson's game-high 16 points. Natalie Headley added 13 points.
The Wildcats, who led by as many as 25 points in the second half, had a commanding 54-33 lead after Center hit the front-end of two free throws with 6:16 left. But, they had to weather through a near five-and-half minute scoring drought near the end of the game which allowed UNCG to close within five, 54-49, and 1:05 left. The Spartans used a 16-2 run during the 'Cats dry spell to get back in it.
Barbara Sitton (Richmond, Va.) and Kristen Johnsen (Wayne, Pa.) iced the win for the 'Cats going 4-for-4 at the charity stripe in the last 35 seconds.
Both Wildcats had strong games. Sitton finished with a stat-line of eight points, six rebounds, five assists and four steals. Johnsen worked hard down on the blocks, getting eight points and a career-high tying 14 rebounds.
Murray got things rolling fast with a quick five points, including a three-ball that made it 13-2 to start the game and UNCG burned a quick 30-second timeout at 16:40.
The Spartans regrouped to cut the deficit to four, 22-18, behind Patterson, who had 10 first-half points. Davidson though turned it on again, closing the half on a 16-2 run for a 38-20 lead at the break. The spurt included holding UNCG scoreless for nearly eight minutes as the 'Cats had a 14-0 run during the drought. Center sparked the run off the bench with seven points and six Wildcats in all had four or more points during the stanza.
Davidson returns home for its final two games, hosting Appalachian State and Wofford, Feb. 18-20.
