2012 Academic All-PFL Team
SAINT LOUIS, Mo. – Led by senior Chazzo Habliston on the first team, four Davidson student-athletes were elected to the 20th Academic All-Pioneer Football League team by the conference's sports information directors, the league office announced Tuesday.
Classmates Lanny Funsten, Patrick Moynahan and Adam Dulberger represented the Wildcats on the second team.
Pioneer Football League athletic directors established the Academic All-PFL squads in 1993 as a way to recognize the league's outstanding student-athletes. To be eligible for Academic All-PFL consideration, a student-athlete must be a varsity starter or key reserve, maintain a cumulative grade-point average of 3.00 on a scale of 4.00 and reached sophomore standing both athletically and academically at his current institution.
Funsten and Moynahan earned first-team All-PFL honors Tuesday, while Habliston and Dulberger were honorable mentions.
Habliston (Alexandria, Va./St. Stephen's & St. Agnes), an economics major, ranked third in the PFL and 48th in the nation, averaging 40.02 yards per punt. Seven of his 54 punts on the season were over 50 yards, with a long of 54, and he placed 22 punts inside the 20-yard line. Habliston was named the PFL Special Teams Player of the Week and a CFPA Punter of the Week Honorable Mention for his performance against Dayton, in which he averaged 41.4 yards on seven punt attempts, placing two inside the 20-yard line and booming a long of 50 yards. He also made one tackle.
Funsten (Raleigh, N.C./Ravenscroft), a political science major, team captain and three-time All-PFL honoree, became Davidson's all-time receptions (229), receiving yards (2,770) and reception touchdowns (20) leader this past season, continuing as Davidson's leading receiver for a third-straight season with 78 receptions for 948 yards and six touchdowns in 11 starts. His reception (7.09) and receiving yards (86.18) per game averages ranked second and third, respectively, in the conference and 16th and 25th, respectively, in the nation. Funsten set a Pioneer Football League record with 17 receptions in a game against Jacksonville, totaling 246 yards and a touchdown. The performance earned him the PFL Offensive Player of the Week award and a College Football Performance Awards honorable mention.
Moynahan (Sandwich, Mass./BC High), a classics major and team captain, set a new Davidson single-season record with 122 tackles. His average of 11 per game ranked second in the PFL and 11th in the nation. Moynahan's top performance came at Marist when he made a school-record 22 tackles, which ranked as the sixth-best performance in the FCS this season and earned him the PFL Defensive Player of the Week award.
Dulberger (Myersville, Md./Middletown), a biology major, tied for second in the PFL with 15 passes defended, breaking up 12 and ranking third in the league with three interceptions. He was named the College Sports Madness Defensive Player of the Week following Davidson's overtime win at Valparaiso, in which he defended five passes, breaking up four and intercepting one, and matched his career high of seven tackles (six solo).
Dayton led the PFL with 10 selections to the Academic All-PFL team, while Butler had nine selections and the most on the first team with five.
