2012 All-PFL Team
SAINT LOUIS, Mo. – Wide receiver Lanny Funsten, tight end Reese Williams and linebacker Patrick Moynahan led six Davidson All-Pioneer Football League honorees, as the Wildcat trio was elected to the first team, the league office announced Tuesday.
Offensive lineman Adam Kurtz, defensive back Adam Dulberger and punter Chazzo Habliston earned All-PFL honorable mentions.
All selections were made by the league's coaches, who were not permitted to vote for their own players.
Funsten (Raleigh, N.C./Ravenscroft), now a three-time All-PFL honoree, became Davidson's all-time receptions (229), receiving yards (2,770) and reception touchdowns (20) leader during his senior campaign in 2012, continuing as Davidson's leading receiver for a third-straight season with 78 receptions for 948 yards and six touchdowns in 11 starts. His receptions (7.09) and receiving yards (86.18) per game averages ranked second and third, respectively, in the conference and 16th and 25th, respectively, in the nation. Funsten set a Pioneer Football League record with 17 receptions in a game against Jacksonville, also totaling 246 yards and a touchdown to earn the PFL Offensive Player of the Week award and a College Football Performance Awards honorable mention. He also had a 13-catch, 131–yard performance against eventual league co-champion Butler.
This is Funsten's first selection to the All-PFL first team. He is also the fourth Wildcat to become a three-time All-PFL honoree since Davidson became a member of the league in 2001, joining Chris Costello (2001-03), Brett Dioguardi (2004-06) and John Leverett (2003-05).
Williams and Moynahan received their first selections to the All-PFL team.
Williams (Abilene, Texas/Abilene Cooper) had a breakout season as a junior, bouncing back from a sophomore campaign that was cut short by injury after just three games. He hauled in a career-best 51 receptions for 522 yards to rank second on the team in both categories and 11th and 13th, respectively, in the PFL. His top performance came in an overtime win at Valapraiso, in which he caught 10 passes for 131 yards to earn the CFPA National Tight End of the Week award. Williams also earned CFPA honorable mention nods after hauling in five passes for 46 yards against Presbyterian and catching seven passes for 74 yards and a touchdown in a win at Campbell. His touchdown catch against Jacksonville was featured by ESPN's SportsCenter as the No. 4 play of the day in its daily Top 10 segment.
Moynahan (Sandwich, Mass./BC High), an All-PFL honorable mention last season, set a new Davidson single-season record with 122 tackles. His average of 11 per game ranked second in the PFL and 11th in the nation. Moynahan's top performance came at Marist when he made a school-record 22 tackles, which ranked as the sixth-best performance in the FCS this season and earned him the PFL Defensive Player of the Week award. The senior also ranked ninth in the conference, averaging one tackle for loss per game.
All three served as team captains during the season and are Davidson's first first-team All-PFL representatives since 2008 (Will Nolte). The Wildcats had not had multiple first team picks since 2006 (six).
In addition to the 30-man first and second teams, a list of 56 players received honorable mention honors, including Kurtz, Dulberger and Habliston.
Kurtz (Kinnelon, N.J./Don Bosco Prep), a junior, started all 11 games for the Wildcats, anchoring a youthful offensive line on which he was the lone returning starter. Despite the inexperience, Kurtz and his unit helped the Wildcats produce the 15th most prolific passing offense in the nation and fourth-best in the PFL, averaging 291.3 yards per game.
Dulberger (Myersville, Md./Middletown), a senior, tied for second in the PFL with 15 passes defended, breaking up 12 and ranking third in the league with three interceptions. He was named the College Sports Madness Defensive Player of the Week following Davidson's overtime win at Valparaiso, in which he defended five passes, breaking up four and intercepting one, and matched his career high of seven tackles (six solo). His breakup on 3rd-and-10 on Valpo's second-to-last drive in regulation prevented the Crusaders from breaking the 21-21 tie before overtime.
Habliston (Alexandria, Va./St. Stephen's & St. Agnes), a senior, ranked third in the PFL and 48th in the nation, averaging 40.02 yards per punt. Seven of his 54 punts on the season were over 50 yards, with a long of 54, and he placed 22 punts inside the 20-yard line. Habliston was named the PFL Special Teams Player of the Week and a CFPA Punter of the Week Honorable Mention for his performance against Dayton, in which he averaged 41.4 yards on seven punt attempts, placing two inside the 20-yard line and booming a long of 50 yards. He also made one tackle.
There were three unanimous selections to the 2012 All-PFL First Team. Marist had two unanimous picks with senior wide receiver Mike Rios and senior defensive lineman Terrence Fede. Butler senior linebacker Jordan Ridley also was a unanimous first-team choice.
In addition, Ridley is one of two players – along with Drake senior linebacker Tyler Moorehead – who join an elite list to receive First-Team All-PFL honors three times during their careers. They become only the 40th and 41st players in league history to accomplish that feat.
Nine of the league's 10 members had at least one first-team All-PFL selection. Butler and San Diego had six first-team selections each while five members, including Drake – the third co-champion, had three each.
San Diego had 12 total members named to the league's two squads. Drake had 10 selections and Jacksonville had nine.
The Academic All-PFL team will be released Wednesday, concluding the league's awards week.
