CHARLOTTE, N.C. – The Davidson men's cross country team will look for success in familiar territory, as they will compete in the NCAA Southeast Regional meet Friday at 1:15 p.m. at nearby McAlpine Park.
The women's 6K will start at noon and will be followed by the men's 10K. Admission is free to the public.
All-Southern Conference performers Demetrios Pagonis and Wes Reynolds will look to lead the Wildcats, which have been ranked as high as 11th this season in the Southeast according to U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Association regional rankings.
Davidson will look to take advantage of their familiarity with the course as they typically compete on it annually. The 'Cats placed third on the 8K course at the Charlotte Cross Country Invitational, on Oct. 12, placing ahead of regional foes such as Appalachian State, High Point, Clemson, Richmond and Charlotte.
Eastern Kentucky enters the meet as the favored squad atop the Southeast Region rankings, and is ranked 15th in the nation. No. 17 Virginia Tech and five other ACC powers will also be competing.
Last season, Davidson placed 14th in the 32-team field behind a record-breaking performance by the since-graduated Ryan Hopkins. The senior broke the school 10K course record and earned all-region honors with a 12th place finish in 30:22.0 to lead the Wildcats to a 14th place finish. He bested the school record of 31:07 held by Brent Ferrell since the NCAA Southeast Regionals in 1999. Ferrell placed 26th in that meet, which was the previous best finish by a Wildcat runner.
Current senior Vincent Weir was Davidson's second finisher with an 88th-place finish in 32:17.7, while classmates Pagonis (97th, 32:29.8) and Reynolds (102nd, 32:32.5) followed with times also rank among the top-10 best performers in Davidson history.
