DAVIDSON, N.C. – Reese Williams' career day at Valparaiso was the nation's top performance by a tight end for the week, the College Football Performance Awards determined, thus the Davidson junior was named the CFPA FCS National Tight End of the Week by the organization on Monday. Davidson defensive back Zach Clark also received a CFPA Player of the Week honorable mention.
CFPA recipients are selected exclusively based upon objective scientific rankings of the extent to which individual players increase the overall effectiveness of their teams.
Williams caught a career-high 10 passes for a career–high 131 yards to lead all pass catchers in the game and help lead the Wildcats to a 28-27 overtime victory over Valpo. The Abilene, Texas native nearly had two touchdowns, but was marked out-of-bounds just short of the goal line.
Clark, a sophomore, also had a career day, making eight tackles, including 3.0 for loss and 2.0 sacks. The Martinsville, Ind. native came up big to stop a potential momentum swing late in the third quarter. After a Davidson fumble near the goal line was returned deep into its own territory to the 22–yard line, Clark sacked the Valpo quarterback on second down for a loss of nine yards to force 3rd-and-17. The Crusaders had to throw deep on the next play and were called for offensive pass interference, which moved them out of field goal range.
Williams had received two CFPA honorable mentions earlier this season, while the honor is Clark's first.
Other Davidson CFPA honorees this season include Patrick Moynahan (linebacker), Dan Casey (defensive back), Lanny Funsten (wide receiver), Jonathan Carkhuff (quarterback) and Chazzo Habliston (punter)
Davidson will conclude the season Saturday at home in Richardson Stadium against San Diego at 1 p.m.
