Pagonis, Reynolds Lead Men’s Cross Country to Fourth-Place Finish at SoCon Championship

MT. PLEASANT, S.C. – Seniors Demetrios Pagonis and Wes Reynolds both earned all-conference honors as they led the Davidson men's cross country team to a fourth-place finish at the Laurel Hill Plantation in Mt. Pleasant, S.C. on Saturday.

MT. PLEASANT, S.C. – Seniors Demetrios Pagonis and Wes Reynolds both earned all-conference honors as they led the Davidson men's cross country team to a fourth-place finish at the Laurel Hill Plantation in Mt. Pleasant, S.C. on Saturday.
The Appalachian State men's and women's cross country teams swept the 2012 Southern Cross CountryChampionship races. The Davidson men totaled 97 points to finish just six points out of second place.
Pagonis completed the 8K course in 24:56.12 to place eighth and earn a place on the All-Southern Conference second team. Reynolds also garnered second-team honors, placing 10th in 25:09.49.
UNCG's Paul Chelimo, the 2011 individual champion, led the men's race from the start and finished the course in 23:42.22 to claim the 2012 individual title. Chelimo finished 15 secondsahead of his teammate, second-place finisher Paul Katam (23:57.50). Chattanooga's Nathan Wanuch (24:35.64) and Appalachian State's Alex Taylor (24:42.01) finished third and fourth, respectively, while Furman's Wilkerson Given (24:44.21) rounded out the top five finishers on the men's side.
The Mountaineers finished with 63 points to claim the 2012 men's team title, while Chattanooga finished in second with 91 points and UNCG in third with 93 points.
Chelimo was named the Men's Runner of the Year, his second-consecutive honor, while Chattanooga's Trevor Janssen was named the Men's Freshman of the Year.
Junior Grayam Sailor-Tynes and freshman Daniel Samet finished consecutively in 22nd (25:37.31) and 23rd (25:38.42), respectively for Davidson. Samet's performance earned him a place on the SoCon All-Freshman team.
Ryan Phillips rounded out the Wildcats' top five scorers with a 34th-place finish in 26:08.03. Senior Vincent Weir (35th, 26:10.41) and sophomore Sal del Giudice (45th, 26:35.27) completed the Davidson scoring contingent.
Davidson will next compete at the NCAA Southeast Regional in nearby McAlpine Park in Charlotte Friday, Nov. 9.
