Men's Cross Country Set For SoCon Championship Meet
10/26/2012 5:17:00 PM | Men's Cross Country
DAVIDSON, N.C. - Davidson seniors Wes Reynolds and Demetrios Pagonis will be looking for a little redemption as they lead the Davidson men's cross country team to the 2012 Southern Conference Cross Country Championships Saturday at Laurel Hill Plantation in Mt. Pleasant, S.C.
The event begins with the women's 5K race at 10:00 a.m., followed by the men's 8K at 10:45 a.m. The event will conclude with an awards ceremony to honor top team and individual performances.
Reynolds and Pagonis finished in 15th and 16th, respectively in last year's race, leaving them just outside the All-Southern Conference team, which includes only the top 14 finishers. As a team, the Wildcats finished in second for the second time in the last three years, equaling their top finish in program history.
Pagonis holds the team's top time so far this year, clocking a 24:36.7 at the NCAA Pre-National meet in Louisville in the 'Cats last outing. However, Pagonis is just one leader on a Wildcats team that placed first at the USC Upstate Eye Opener, competed in a tough field at Pre-Nationals, and ran their way to an impressive third-place result at the Charlotte Invitational, led by senior Vincent Weir.
Davidson will be looking to unseat defending SoCon Champion UNCG at this year's race, hosted by The Citadel. UNCG was tabbed the preseason favorite in the coaches' poll and looks to defend its 2011 title. The Spartans are led by 2011 SoCon Runner of the Year, Paul Chelimo, who holds the conference's fastest 8K time this season (22:59.62). The Spartans will also look for a strong performance from 2011 SoCon Freshman of the Year, Paul Katam, who holds the second-fastest 8K time in the conference this season (23:49.90).
Davidson comes into the weekend ranked 15th in the Southeast Region by the USTFCCCA, but plenty of other conference opponents have similar status. UNCG ranks just ahead of the Wildcats in the Southeast Region in 12th. Samford holds the 10th spot in the South Region rankings, while Chattanooga follows them in 12th.
