CHARLESTON, S.C. – Davidson fell to College of Charleston 5-0 in Southern Conference men's soccer action Saturday evening at Patriots Point.
“Tonight's contest needs to make us tougher,” said Davidson head coach Matt Spear. “It was a disappointing effort and lack of discipline as well as focus that led to set piece goals.”
For the second straight contest the Wildcats found themselves behind 1-0 after being called for a foul in the box. Ralph Lundy put away the Cougars' penalty kick for his third goal of the season.
Shortly after Lundy's 18th minute score, College of Charleston (8-8-0, 4-1-0 SoCon) extended its advantage to 2-0 with a strike from the team's leading-scorer Sean de Silva.
At the 40:35 mark, Davidson (6-8-1, 2-4-0 SoCon) had a great opportunity to make it a one-goal game heading into the break, but Max Riehemann's header off a Chris Pettiglio corner kick caromed off the post.
Gabe Rivera also hit the frame for the Wildcats in the final period.
In addition to setting up Connor Coon's goal early in the second half, de Silva put the game out of reach with his second goal of the contest and seventh of the season in the 66th minute to make it 4-0.
“De Silva is a special attacking threat, which he showed tonight.”
College of Charleston also got a score from Luke Huggett with just over eight minutes to play.
“I have to give a lot of credit to Charleston for finishing its chances," commented Spear.
Despite the loss, the Wildcats held a commanding 11-1 advantage in corner kicks, while the Cougars finished with a 14-12 edge in shots.
“The stats in shot attempts and especially corner kicks should've resulted in a different score line.”
Davidson will continue its six-game road trip to conclude the regular season with a 7 p.m. contest at Duke Tuesday.
“We need to put this game behind us as we get ready for Duke, which will be a fun opportunity.”
