DAVIDSON, N.C. – After breaking multiple records Saturday, Davidson senior wide receiver Lanny Funsten was named the Pioneer Football League Offensive Player of the Week Sunday by both the league office and College Sports Madness.
Funsten broke a PFL single-game record with 17 receptions, earned a PFL season-high 246 yards receiving and also scored a touchdown against Jacksonville, which boasted the FCS' top-ranked passing defense entering the game. In the process, he became Davidson's all-time leader in both receptions (191) and yards receiving (2,362), and is the PFL active career leader in both categories.
It was the third-best single-game performance in receptions and fourth-best performance in receiving yards among all FCS receivers this season.
The Raleigh, N.C. native now leads the PFL with 40 receptions for 540 yards this season, which through six games results in an average of 6.7 receptions and 90.0 yards per game. The averages rank 11th and 16th in the FCS, respectively.
Funsten broke the Davidson career reception record of 179 that had stood for 42 years and was previously held by Mike Mikolayunas (1968-70), and the career receiving yard record of 2,220 that was held by Ryan Hubbard (2004-07).
Funsten's 17 receptions in the game tied a school record, first set in 1969 by Mikolayunas (Davidson did not join the PFL until 2001), and his 246 yards was just two yards shy of the school-mark set by Rick Lyon in 1968. The previous PFL record of 14 receptions was most recently reached by Zach Watkins of Butler in 2011, and the receiving yards in a game record is 275, set by Valparaiso's Rob Giancola in 2003.
Funsten is the third Wildcat to earn weekly honors from the PFL. Chazzo Habliston earned special teams honors on Oct. 8 for a strong punting performance vs. Dayton and linebacker Patrick Moynahan earned defensive honors on Sept. 23 for his 22-tackle performance at Marist.
College Sports Madness identifies the highest impact players nationally and the top offensive and defensive player from each FCS conference in its weekly feature.
