Men’s Cross Country Returns to USTFCCCA Southeast Rankings
10/1/2012 1:51:00 PM | Men's Cross Country
NEW ORLEANS – A strong performance Friday at the Charlotte Cross Country Invitational moved Davidson men's cross country back into the Top 15 of the Southeast region, as the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association placed the Wildcats 11th in its weekly regional rankings announced Monday.
Davidson was ranked 11th in the preseason and Week 1 rankings, but had been unranked the past two weeks. The Wildcats responded Friday in the Charlotte Invitational at McAlpine Park – the same course on which the NCAA Southeast Region Championship will be run – by finishing third ahead of three Southeast top-15 teams: Richmond (No. 11), Appalachian State (No. 12) and High Point (No. 14). ASU maintained its 12th-place ranking this week while High Point moved up to 13th and Richmond fell out of the poll.
Eastern Kentucky (Ohio Valley Conference) leads the region this week and is followed by William & Mary (Colonial Athletic Association). ACC teams hold six of the next seven places, with Big East-member Louisville ranked No. 8. CAA-member George Mason is 10th, while following Davidson is Southern Conference foe Appalachian State, High Point (Big South), Liberty (Big South) and Kentucky (SEC).
USTFCCCA Regional Cross Country Rankings are determined subjectively by a single member coach in each respective region. The regional representative is tasked with weighing returning team strength with current-season results in determining predicted team finishes at the NCAA Regional Championships.
Davidson's top runners will next compete at the NCAA Division I Pre-Nationals hosted by the University of Louisville on Oct. 13. Select runners will return to McAlpine Park Friday, Oct. 12 to compete in the Royal Cross Country Challenge hosted by Queens University.
