DAVIDSON, N.C. — The Davidson men's and women's swimming teams concluded their final meet prior to the Coastal Collegiate Swimming Association Championships by hosting the CCSA Duals, and both teams had excellent showings on Saturday in the Cannon Natatorium Pool.

The Davidson men (3-3, 2-1 CCSA) swam to a 174-97 win over Howard, while the women (7-4, 7-1 CCSA) went 5-1 in dual races against Georgia Southern (W, 154-146), Campbell (W, 193-101), Howard (W, 253-35), North Carolina A&T (W, 252-29), Radford (W, 230-69) and Liberty (L, 133.50-160.50).

On the men's side, they picked up 10 first place finishes, led by the 400 Medley Relay team that set a new pool record. The quartet of Curtis Chaney, Drew Onken, Geoff Peitz and Joe Burquist crushed the old pool time by touching the pads at 3:20.39, almost four and half seconds better than the previous mark which was set by the University of Tampa in 2000 with a time of 3:24.78.

"After narrowly missing that pool record earlier in the season, the guys were excited to make a run at it in our last dual meet," said John Young. "3:20 is an impressive performance; I'm eager to see how they follow it up at our championship."

Peitz went on to collect two more first place finishes in the 100 Breast and 100 Free as he clocked in at times of 1:00.04 in the Breaststroke event and 46.91 in the Free event.

Burquist also scored a first place showing with a time of 55.68 in the 100 Back. Thomas Bigham tallied a first place finish in the 200 Fly (2:00.41), while Will Fox swept the 100 Fly event with a time of 52.08.

Spencer Gill (200 Breast- 2:13.69), Ethan Levinson (500 Free- 4:52.86) and Dylan Ludwick (200 Free- 1:43.32) each picked up first place finishes in their respectively events as well. Onken was right behind Ludwick in the 200 Free at a time of 1:44.18.

It was a tight swimming day all-around on the women's side as each of the competitors gave Davidson a run in all 16 events. The Wildcats meet against Georgia Southern came down to the final relay after they had trailed from the start, scoring a third place finish to earn the win.

"The women's meet saw fast swimming from all over the pool," said Young. "Liberty's team deserves praise for really putting together impressive performances all afternoon.”

“I was especially impressed with the way that our women stayed focused when we got behind early, and responded when we had a chance to win the Georgia Southern meet in the last relay," said Young. "That willingness to stay competitive is important to reinforce as we put the finishing touches on our championship preparation; I'm proud of the women for winning five meets today.”

Meredith Nakano, fresh off being named the CCSA Women's Swimmer of the Week on Wednesday, paced the Wildcats with a pair of first place finishes. She swam to a time of 1:06.26 in the 100 Breast and then followed that up with another first pace showing in the 200 Breast with a time of 2:23.96. She was also third in the 100 Free, swimming to a time of 53.94.

Kelsi Hobbs picked up two second place finishes in the 200 Fly (2:10.10) and 100 Fly (59.74), while Allison Cottle was right behind her in the 200 Fly at 2:12.90 for fifth and Liz Mace was fourth in the 100 Fly at 59.81.

Lauren Kamperman earned the 'Cats points in the 200 IM (2:10.90) and 200 Free (1:58.22) with second and third place finishes, respectively.

In diving, Kaliya Burton-Akright had the best showing. She scored a first place finish in the 1-Meter dive with 262.05 points, while she was third in the 3-Meter dive with 236.88 points. Jessica Ardecky was second in that event with 243.15 points.

Davidson will now ready itself for the CCSA Championships, which will be held Feb. 16-18 in Athens, Ga.
