DAVIDSON, N.C. — Head coach Greg Ashton has announced the spring slate of games for the Davidson women's soccer team and it features a pair of matchups against national top programs in South Carolina and North Carolina.
The Wildcats, coming off a 9-9-2 campaign in the Fall, open their spring slate of games at South Carolina, Mar. 18, with gametime set for 12 p.m. They will also face Georgia State the same day at 1:30 p.m.
South Carolina and Davidson saw each other three years ago in the first round of the 2009 NCAA Tournament. The 'Cats were making their first ever appearance in the tournament. They played very well, trailing only 1-0 at halftime to the No. 8 Gamecocks, who were hosting, before eventually falling 4-0.
USC again reached the NCAA Tournament this past Fall, making it to the second round where it lost to No. 1 Stanford, 2-0. The Gamecocks finished the year at 16-7 and a school-record 9-2 in Southeastern Conference play. They were ranked 25th in the final National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) poll.
Davidson follows that game up with a trip to 20-time NCAA Champion North Carolina, Mar. 25. UNC finished the Fall season at 13-5-2 and was knocked out of the NCAA Tournament by Central Florida in a sudden death shootout.
The Wildcats and Tar Heels have faced each other just once, back in 2005 during Ashton's second year with UNC prevailing 6-0.
The 2012 Spring schedule will have Davidson finishing out at home, starting with a April 1 matchup against Radford. The Wildcats will then turn around and play Winthrop, April 3 under the lights.
Then to close out their Spring schedule, the Wildcats play host to Wingate and Southern Conference-foe Appalachian State on Friday, April 20.
