CLEMSON, S.C. – Davidson senior Ryan Hopkins completed the 8K course at Clemson's Musser Farms in a Wildcat record time of 24:06.54, to place second at the Clemson Invitational Friday evening.
Davidson placed third in the highly competitive field that included several ACC teams. No. 9 Florida State won with 28 points and was followed by Virginia Tech (ranked eight in the USTFCAA Southeast Region) with 70 points. The 'Cats were third with 87 and were followed by Georgia Tech (125), ranked 11th in the South Region, Clemson (132), Wake Forest (137) the ninth ranked Southeast team and Southern Conference foe Furman (143).
"I am very proud of everyone's effort today, and it was awesome to beat some strong ACC teams," said Davidson head coach Gary Andrew. "Although we won this race last year, this was a better performance. I am very pleased where everyone is at with their training."
Hopkins, who now owns the five fastest 8K times in Davidson history, was just 10 seconds off the pace of race winner Ty McCormack of Clemson.
Junior Demetrios Pagonis placed fifth in 24:18.16 to give the 'Cats two runners in the Top Five. Senior Ian Tupper was 20th in 24:49.54. Freshman Henry Falotico (35th place, 25:10.05) and sophomore Andrew Lantz (36th place, 25:11.34) rounded out the 'Cats scoring group.
All of the top-five times were personal-best performances that rank among the Top-10
Juniors Wes Reynolds (38th, 25:14.97) and Vincent Weir (42nd place, 25:22.00) were the 'Cats sixth and seventh finishers.
The Wildcats will next compete Saturday, Oct. 1 at the Louisville Cross Country Classic
