Davidson Battles Cross-County Rival Charlotte on Sunday Under the Lights

DAVIDSON, N.C. — Coming off its first two road contests of the year, Davidson returns home for a matchup against its cross-county rival in the Charlotte 49ers on Sunday under the lights at Alumni Stadium in women's soccer action.
The Matchup
Davidson returns home after playing at the Navy Tournament last weekend. The Wildcats will host Charlotte for the ninth time on Sunday at 7 p.m. at Alumni Stadium.
The All-Time Series/Last Meeting
The two schools have squared off 15 times, with the 49ers holding an 11-3-1 all-time record in the series. Davidson fell 1-0 last year at Charlotte and have dropped the last two meetings. Prior to that, the Wildcats had won three straight from 2004-06.
Scouting the Wildcats
Davidson (2-4-1) went 1-1 this past weekend at the Navy Tournament ... last Friday saw the 'Cats net their first program win against George Washington, 4-2 ... Stephanie Piperno had her first two-goal game, including scoring the game-winner ... she is tied with Lauren Mihan and Julia Singley for the team lead in goals with three ... Davidson outshot GW, 25-5, and knocked in three second-half goals in the win ... Becca Fisher tallied her first career assist on Piperno's game-winner ... ... The Wildcats forced overtime vs. Navy, but the Mids scored five minutes into the first overtime for the 1-0 win ... Piperno, goalkeeper Rachel Locke and defender Meg Sanborn were each named to the all-tournament team ... Sanborn helped start the comeback at GW with her first career goal on a header off a corner kick from Rachel Stelter ... Locke had a strong weekend, earning her first win vs. the Colonials and earning her first career start against the Mids ... she made five saves against Navy, including two game-saving dives that kept the game scoreless ... Davidson as a team is tops in the league in shots (99), and second in points (39) and goals (17) ... the Wildcats are 2-5-1 at Alumni Stadium vs. Charlotte all-time ... Davidson is 1-3-1 at home this year, having their school-record 13-game unbeaten streak snapped vs. Fla. Gulf Coast, Aug. 28 ... the 'Cats' welcome back eight starters and 17 total letterwinners from last year ... Davison was picked to finish seventh in the SoCon preseason poll.
Scouting the 49ers
Charlotte (2-5-2) has played three of the top teams in the country the last three games ... the 49ers played at South Carolina on Thursday, falling in overtime 2-1 ... then last weekend they played at No. 14 Tennessee and No. 16 Memphis, dropping 5-0 and 6-2 contests ... Like Davidson, Charlotte has also played Fla. Gulf Coast (L, 0-2), Providence (T, 0-0), UNC Wilmington (W, 1-0) and East Carolina (L, 1-3) ... Macky Wingo paces the team with two goals and three assists for seven points ... she was named to the preseason Atlantic 10 all-conference team ... Oni Bernard is second with a pair of goals for four points ... goalkeeper Alex Kubrick has started all seven games, with 28 saves and a 2.23 goals against average ... Charlotte is 0-3-1 on the road this year ... the 49ers return 17 letterwinners from last year's 16-5 squad ... they were picked second in the A-10 after winning the regular season a year ago with an 8-1 record ... Charlotte added 12 newcomers to the roster, with two of them earning a spot on the preseason A-10 All-Rookie Team ... head coach John Cullen has gone 32-8-2 during his two years at Charlotte.
