DAVIDSON, N.C. — Davidson head women's lacrosse coach Kim Wayne has announced seniors Jenna Mugele (Baltimore, Md.) and Erin Keitel (Carlsbad, Calif.) along with junior Alanna Parker (Spring Valley, Calif.) were named team captains for the 2011-12 season as voted on by the team and coaching staff.
The senior duo of Mugele and Keitel will anchor a strong returning offensive unit for the Wildcats. Mugele, who was a team captain a year ago, finished sixth on the team with a career-high tying 15 goals. She had a personal-high 19 points with the addition of four assists to her 15 goals. It was the third straight year she has tallied 15 goals to give her 45 for her career. The senior has been a staple in the starting lineup, having started 42 of her 52 career games.
Fellow classmate Keitel had a record junior campaign that saw her set career highs in nearly every offensive and defensive category. The senior midfielder started all 18 games a year ago, tallying 26 goals, nine assists and 35 points. Her goal and point totals were third-best on the team as she was honored with the team's Just Do It! award. In addition to her solid offensive numbers, Keitel also added 15 groundballs and 10 draw controls.
The Wildcats' final captain, Parker, has been a two-time All-National Lacrosse Conference member, garner first team honors last year as a sophomore. The junior midfielder followed up a stout freshman year with another strong sophomore campaign. She recorded 37 goals and 40 points, both second-best on the team. In her two-year career, Parker has already amassed 76 goals, 15 assists and 91 points, which is just nine away from reaching the program's top-5.
She opened the season scoring in 15 straight games to push her consecutive goal streak to 22 dating back to the end of her freshman year, before it was snapped vs. American in final regular season game.
Defensively Parker was just as strong, picking up 21 groundballs, forcing a career-high 11 turnovers and hauling in 47 draw controls. Her draw control total was fourth-best in the NLC, right behind teammate Erin Doherty.
The Wildcats, who return 16 letterwinners and eight starters, finished the 2011 year 6-12 after going 1-1 at the NLC Tournament, which was hosted by Davidson. The 'Cats picked up an 11-6 win vs. Liberty to open the tournament, but fell to Jacksonville, 19-7, in the semifinals.
This will be Davidson's final year in the NLC as it will make a move to the Big South in 2013.
