DAVIDSON, N.C. — Freshman Julia Singley (Morganton, N.C.) had herself a collegiate debut to remember, netting a pair of goals in Davidson's 8-1 win vs. UNC Asheville and wrapped up the week by garnering Southern Conference Player of the Week honors for all games from Aug. 19-22.
The player of the week honor is the first for Davidson since Kyri Bye-Nagel won her second weekly honor of the season on Oct. 7, 2008. Since 1994, the Wildcats have garnered the second-most league player of the week honors with 27 now.
Singley knocked in the go-ahead goal at the 34:52 mark in the first half when she got a feed from Rachael Newmister (Clover, S.C.) in the box and chipped the ball past the diving Bulldog goalkeeper for a 2-0 lead. The goal would eventually be the game-winner after UNCA scored in the early stages of the second half to cut the lead to 2-1.
Singley tacked on her second goal in the second half and started a rally of six straight Wildcat goals for the final score of 8-1. She put six of eight shots on goal and was one of four freshmen on the evening to find the back of the net.
Davidson continues its five-game homestand with a pair of contests this weekend. The 'Cats welcome Providence College on Friday night at 7 p.m. and then host Florida Gulf Coast on Sunday at 1 p.m. The two contests are the first meetings between the schools.
