DAVIDSON, N.C. — Left-handed pitcher Chris Lamb has signed with the Oakland A's, coming to terms with the team just before Monday night's deadline.
Lamb, who was selected by the A's in the 11th round (346th overall) to become the highest pitcher ever drafted out of Davidson College, will forego his senior season with the Wildcats and report to team facilities.
"I'd like to thank Coach Zandler and Coach Cooke for making me into the pitcher that I am today," Lamb said. "I'd like to thank my teammates for an amazing three years. It was a tough decision. I really enjoyed my time at Davidson, but I wanted to be a professional baseball player, and it was the right time for me to do that."
Lamb, who finished second in the Southern Conference in 2011 with 85 strikeouts after leading the regular season, is also the Wildcats' highest draft pick since the New York Yankees selected Robert Eenhoorn (shortstop) in the second round in 1990 (45th overall). Lamb made 45 appearances and started 32 games over a three-year career with the Wildcats, tossing 193.2 innings and recording 190 career strikeouts while holding hitters to a .294 average.
