KANNAPOLIS, N.C. – Davidson rising sophomore Richard Fountain continues to sharpen his golf game over summer break, competing as an amateur and placing eighth in a field of 147 professional and amateur golfers Thursday at the Carolinas PGA 47th Toshiba/EMC North Carolina Open held at The Club at Irish Creek.
The North Carolina Open is one of the four crown jewels of the Carolinas PGA major tournament schedule and is a highly-anticipated stop on the way to the Carolinas PGA Professional Championship in September
Fountain (Raleigh, N.C.) finished the 54-hole tournament at six-under par (67-72-68=207) on the 7,099-yard, par-71 course, eight stokes behind tournament champion Scott Harvey (-14). Fountain, who recently qualified for the North Carolina Amateur Championship, was one of five amateurs in the top 10.
Davidson head golf coach Tim Straub is also competing this week. Straub began play Thursday in The Rex Hospital Open, a PGA Nationwide Tour event, at TPC Wakefield Plantation in Raleigh, N.C.
