DAVIDSON, N.C. — Davidson College juniors Stephanie Gerow (Houston, Texas) and Tyler Mullen (Westminster, Md.) recently were named two of 25 student-athletes that were recipients of the sixth annual Coleman Lew Award as announced by the Coleman Lew & Associates, Inc., a national executive search firm, and the Southern Conference.
The award recognizes student-athletes from each of the Southern Conference's 12 member institutions. Coaches, faculty athletic representatives and senior women administrators nominate prospective candidates based on leadership, academic excellence and athletic achievement in both the college environment and the community. Athletic directors and representatives from Coleman Lew & Associates conducted one-on-one interviews with the finalists before determining the award winners.
“Our members should take great pride in these student-athletes, who represent their institutions so well,” said SoCon Commissioner John Iamarino. “The Southern Conference is again grateful to Coleman Lew & Associates for their commitment to this program.”
Gerow was the Wildcats' starting midfielder this past Fall, starting all 20 games during her junior campaign. She picked up her fifth career goal, a game-winner, in leading Davidson to a 3-0 win over Presbyterian, while adding an assist in the game to tie her career-best with three points. The junior added another assist in a 1-0 win over Chattanooga that allowed the Wildcats to go unbeaten at home for the first time in program history.
As a sophomore, the midfielder was part of the first Davidson women's soccer program to advance to the NCAA Tournament after the 'Cats captured their fourth SoCon Tournament Title with a 1-0 double-overtime win vs. College of Charleston.
A two-time All-SoCon Academic Team member, Gerow has started 45 of her 62 games played. She has totaled five goals and three assists for 13 points in her three-year career.
Gerow is the second women's soccer player in a row to garner the Coleman Lew Leadership Award after Allison Drutchas took home the SoCon honor a year ago.
Tyler Mullen posted a career-best record of 15-11 at 165 pounds during the 2010-11 season, giving him the fourth-most wins on the team, but an injury abbreviated his junior year and prevented him from competing at the SoCon Championships.
Mullen opened the season by placing third at The Citadel Open with a 5-1 record that included a win by fall and a technical fall. He then narrowly lost a 3-2 decision to 14th ranked Turtogtokh Luvsandorj, the eventual SoCon Wrestler of the Year, in a dual meet at The Citadel. Other highlights from the year include a 2-1 mark at the Pitt Duals and an undefeated run at the BU duals with three decisions.
As a sophomore, Mullen compiled a seven-match winning streak and went 3-1 in conference competition to earn the second seed at the SoCon tournament. Mullen was named to the SoCon All-Freshman team following his rookie season.
