SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Behind his Southern Conference Men's Golf Championship individual medalist performance, Davidson freshman Richard Fountain was named the league's men's golfer of the month for April, the conference office announced Friday.
The Raleigh, N.C. native became the first Davidson golfer to win individual medalist honors at the SoCon Tournament in 38 years and earned the league's automatic individual NCAA Regional Championship bid April 19 at the Country Club of South Carolina in Florence, S.C. He fired a final-round, five-under-par 67, which included a birdie on the final hole, to win by one stroke at 207 (68-72-67), nine-under par.
The NCAA Division I Men's Golf Committee will announce at which of the six NCAA regional destinations Fountain will compete at Monday evening during a telephone press conference beginning at 6 p.m. ET. The selections will be posted at NCAA.com at the conclusion of the call.
Fountain will be the first Davidson golfer to compete in an NCAA regional golf championship since the regional tournament format was adopted in 1989. The last time a Wildcat golfer competed in an NCAA golf championship event was also 38 years ago when Rusty Boyd, the SoCon individual medalist, competed in the 1973 NCAA national tournament, won for the third-consecutive year by eventual two-time Masters champion Ben Crenshaw, at the Stillwater Golf & Country Club in Stillwater, Okla. Boyd placed 61st in the field of 36 teams with a four-round score of 299 (71-73-72-83).
The regional championships will take place at six different sites May 19-21. Fountain may go to the regional hosted by Virginia Tech at Pete Dye River Course in Blacksburg, Va. due to proximity, but could also compete at Omni Tucson Nationals Resort in Tucson, Ariz. (University of Arizona), Colorado National Golf Club in Erie, Colo. (University of Colorado), Golden Ocala Golf Club in Ocala, Fla. (University of Florida), Wolf Run Golf Club in Zionsville, Ind. (Indiana University) or The Farms Golf Course in Rancho Santa Fe, Calif. (University of San Diego).
The 54-hole regional tournaments will be conducted to determine the 30 qualifying teams and six individuals not on those qualifying teams who will compete in the finals May 31-June 5 at Karsten Creek Golf Course in Stillwater, Okla.
Thirteen teams and ten individuals not on those teams will compete at each of three regionals while the other three regionals will have fourteen teams and five individuals not on those teams. The low five teams and the low individual not on those teams will advance to the finals.
