DAVIDSON, N.C. - Davidson BUZZKILL, a 3-on-3 tournament, auction and dinner, started by former Wildcat guard Bryant Barr and featuring the current Davidson men and women's basketball teams, raised over $47,000 last weekend.
The money will be used by the BUZZKILL Foundation to purchase about 4,700 insecticide-covered bed nets in an effort to prevent the spread of Malaria in Africa.
“The way the Davidson community embraces this effort is extraordinary,” said Barr. “With over 350 people involved in the BUZZKILL weekend, we will be able to make a difference in the lives of nearly 20,000 African people.”
Current Golden State Warrior and former Wildcat Stephen Curry joined Barr on campus for the weekend along with former players Andrew Lovedale, Dan Nelms and Logan Kosmalski.
Seventy-five kids played in the 3-on-3 tournament. Teams were encouraged to raise extra money by getting sponsors, and the team which raised the most money received the first pick in a draft of coaches. Four teams raised over $1,000 for the draft, and Curry, Barr and Lovedale were the first three picks.
An online silent auction and a live auction accompanied the tournament. Curry's custom made Davidson shoes that he wore in the Taco Bell Skills Contest at the NBA All-Star weekend drew $1,050, and two seats on the bench during a game with a one-night stay at Davidson Village Inn netted $1,200. A Davidson bench seat signed by coach Bob McKillop and Curry went for $600.
Davidson BUZZKILL has raised over $101,000 since it began in 2009. The idea has been such a success, that after graduating from Davidson in 2010, Barr started the BUZZKILL Foundation and has enlisted other colleges to help. Vanderbilt hosted a BUZZKILL event in April.
The BUZZKILL Foundation is a grassroots organization helping local communities realize a single act of generosity can impact the lives of millions around the world. By partnering with global agencies that aim to prevent the spread of malaria in Africa we touch the lives of people affected by the disease.
